Celebrating America 250: The Spirit of Independence

Jul 1, 2026 | Uncategorized

Fellow EANGUS Members,

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, we reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who chose a new path and declared that their voices deserved to be heard.

What many Americans may not realize is that the National Guard is actually older than the nation itself. Our lineage traces back to December 13, 1636 – more than 140 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen have stood ready to defend their communities, colonies, states, and nation from the very beginning.

In many ways, the story of EANGUS shares a similar spirit.

While our Association is much younger than both America and the National Guard, EANGUS was founded on a principle that echoes the ideals celebrated every Fourth of July: representation and independence. EANGUS was created to ensure enlisted National Guard members had a voice of their own – a place where we could advocate for our benefits, our entitlements, our families, and the future of the National Guard. It gave enlisted Guardsmen a seat at the table and a vehicle to champion issues important to our force.

That mission continues today because of you.

EANGUS is powered by volunteers. Every legislative visit, membership event, scholarship program, conference, committee meeting, and outreach effort happens because someone chose to give their time in service to others. Time spent on EANGUS work often means time away from family, careers, community involvement, and personal pursuits. Those sacrifices are rarely seen, but they are deeply felt and greatly appreciated.

To every volunteer who has answered an email late at night, attended a meeting after work, traveled to advocate for our members, or dedicated countless hours to strengthening our Association – thank you. Your commitment ensures that the enlisted voice of the National Guard remains strong and continues to shape the future of our organization and our force.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, let us remember that freedom, representation, and service are not self-sustaining. Each generation must choose to preserve them.

Thank you for your service, your leadership, and your continued commitment to EANGUS and the National Guard community.

Happy Independence Day and Happy America 250.
